Author visits are a great way to inspire readers and generate excitement about books.

“Kathy did 2 presentations at Hulett School. One presentation was with K-2nd grade and the other was with 3rd-5th grade. She did an excellent job of customizing her presentations to most benefit the two different age groups. Kathy is engaging, knowledgeable, and so comfortable when working with the students. I highly encourage your school to invite Kathy to do a presentation.”

-Twila Pilcher, Hulett School Librarian

Kathy and Heidi presented to our school and did a wonderful job. They directed their presentation to the audience (K-2 and a different presentation for grades 3-6). The presentation was interactive for the students which helped them become more interested in their book as well as focus on the 45 minute presentation. Great presentation and great speakers!!! Looking forward to their new books so we can have them back again.

-Lindsay Hansen, kindergarten teacher at Sundance Elementary

Author visits are a great way to inspire reading and writing among your students! As an educator with 32 years’ experience, I’m eager to share my love of books with kids. I enjoy meeting young people and talking about my writing journey. I aim to encourage students to pursue their dreams, whatever they may be.

I am available for spring and fall bookings in 2024. My presentations generally last 50-60 minutes with some flexibility. These presentations are visual and interactive. Please provide a way for me to share slides (TV monitor, for example). I offer two types of presentations:

1)     Author book talk with a reading and time for discussion

2)     Writing workshop tailored to your specifications (For example: Using Place to Inspire Writing, How to Make Dialogue Work, Building a Story, etc.)

As a former librarian and language arts teacher who struggled to bring in authors, I understand how difficult funding a visit can be. Therefore, at this time, I only charge $200 for a full day ($100 for half a day), plus room, board, and the current government rate for fuel. Collaborating with other schools in your area is a great way to make an author visit affordable.

If you wish to book a visit, email me at bjornestadk@gmail.com. Together, we’ll plan the visit, and I’ll send you a pre-order book form before I come. Book sales are a great way to encourage literacy and build excitement for the visit. I’ll be glad to sign any copies students buy before or during my time with them.

Ways to Fund Visits

  • * Look into a local grant from your State’s Arts Council

  • * Request help from your local PTA

  • * Use book fair funds

  • * Ask your principal or superintendent if there is extra money that might be used to support literacy (for example, gifted and talented funds)
